Pitching Pennies For Those In Need
From November 2nd thru November 16th, the JFK Student Council sponsored a fundraiser entitled "Penny Wars". Each of the eight academic teams was assigned a collection bucket. During the lunch waves each day, students would place their spare change into the buckets. Each coin had a value based on a point scale. Pennies and paper money were assigned positive point values, while silver coins were assigned negative point values. Students placed pennies and paper money into their own team's bucket, and would try to sabotage the other teams by placing silver coins in opposing buckets. Students and staff embraced this fundraiser with overwhelming enthusiasm, and the competition became fierce.
The success of this event far surpassed our expectations. Words cannot express our amazement at our ultimate final total of $2,400! These funds were divided equally among three local charities: Enfield Loaves and Fishes, Enfield Food Shelf and Sisters of the Poor. These organizations were extremely grateful for our donations, and many families will benefit as the holiday season approaches.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Rockville Bank on Hazard Avenue for allowing us to use their coin machines to count the money.
In addition, congratulations go out to the Hargraves Team who achieved the highest point total. We hope that they enjoy their pizza party and movie on November 25th!
Thanks JFK for making our second annual “Penny Wars” such a tremendous success!
Turkey Drive
In addition to the Penny Wars fundraiser, the JFK Student Council assisted in a holiday turkey drive. The extremely generous staff of JFK collected a remarkable 101 turkeys! The turkeys were donated to the Enfield Food Shelf.
