Computer Technology Curriculum

Grades 7 & 8

The Computer Technology Curriculum at J.F.K. is divided into two parts: the directed exploratory curriculum and the supplemental exploratory curriculum. The directed exploratory curriculum, which is required by the Enfield Board of Education for all J.F.K. students, is conducted in 12 day blocks using the academic team's homogeneous classes. The DEC involves keyboarding & introduction to multimedia in seventh grade and, in eighth grade, an interdisciplinary unit entitled "Writing Along the Oregon Trail" which includes basic web site developmental skills. While the core remains the same, the directed exploratory curriculum is upgraded each year as the staff takes advantage of new technological advances, of improvements in its own computer skills, and of the need to respond to changing student needs. Overall, the DEC is a continuation of the technology programs initiated in grade four.
The supplemental exploratory curriculum is generated by the needs and requirements of classroom teachers across all curriculums. Based on a subject's materials, projects are developed through brainstorming and collaboration between the Computer Technology staff and individual teachers or entire departments and the availability of technology at J.F.K. The growing SEC library includes projects in Art, Family & Consumer Science, English, Geography, History, Music, and Reading. In addition, a number of projects are appropriate for use in any subject area. Here again, the SEC is updated and refined each time a project is used.

Three computer labs and stations in the library are set up in a computer network at J.F.K. for student and staff use. The computer hardware consists of eMacs, iMacs, iBooks, and G4 servers. In addition to the four locations listed, each academic team, each non-team subject, and all department chairs have an iBook available for use throughout the year. Special Education, music and art classrooms also have computers on carts. The DEC uses seven software programs with an additional eleven programs available at this time for the SEC,
