ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

If a student is absent from school, parents are requested to CALL the school (763-8855) to report the absence. This number can be called 24 hrs a day. Simply follow the prompts to report the absence. This should be followed with a written excuse to the homeroom teacher. This excuse is to be brought to school the day the student returns to school. The information needed in the excuse is:

  • Reason for absence.
  • Date or dates of absence
  • Parent's signature

If a child is to be absent from school for an extended period of time (5 or more days) and is able to do some work at home, the following procedure should be followed by the parent. Call the student's guidance counselor. The counselor can be reached by dialing 763-8870. If for any reason the counselor cannot be reached, leave a message with the secretary.

When the counselor has been contacted, give the following information.
  • Student's full name.
  • Student's grade.
  • Approximate time the student has been out and how long you expect the child will be at home.
  • What type of assignment the child is able to do.
PLEASE ALLOW THE COUNSELORS 24-HOURS
TO COLLECT THE ASSIGNMENT

Upon return from absence it is the student's responsibility to determine from the teachers what materials and information have been missed and to make arrangements to "make-up" lost work. Work is to be made up within a timeframe worked out between the teacher and the students. Generally, a student is given a day for each day absent to make up the work.

TARDINESS

When a student is tardy for school, which means entering the building after the start of homeroom period, the following action must occur.

  • During homeroom period, report directly to the homeroom.
  • After homeroom period, report directly to the assigned Housemaster's office, sign in on the Tardy Book, receive a pass to class and bring a written excuse from home to explain the tardiness.
  • Each unexcused tardiness to school will be assigned a demerit.
  • Absentees will be checked by phone unless parent notifies JFK in writing in advance.
  • Ensuring that a student arrives at school on time is a parental responsibility. Purposely staying outside the building or in the corridors will be dealt with as mentioned above. Excuses written by parents will not be accepted when the student is known by school authorities to have arrived at school on time, but deliberately failed to enter homeroom at the specified time.

    TRUANCY

A student absent without the consent of his/her parent is truant. Truancy results in zeros for missed work and may be cause for disciplinary action, suspension, or a referral to the Juvenile Court.

    EARLY DISMISSAL

Dismissal from school can only be authorized by the office. Parents who wish their child to be dismissed should send the student to school with a note stating the time of dismissal. This note should be presented to the Housemaster before homeroom period on the day of dismissal. Parents are to sign out their child in the MAIN OFFICE. For the protection of the student, dismissals are routinely made only to the parent of that student. If there are special circumstances that necessitate someone other than the parent is picking up the student, their name should be stated in the dismissal note.

    NO SCHOOL/DELAYED OPENINGS

In case school is canceled because of snow or any other reason, an announcement will be made over local radio stations or you can call the snow line at 253-5170.

Should a 90 minute delay occur, JFK will open at 9:16 A.M. and the busses will run ninety minutes later than usual. Dismissal will be at 2:31 P.M.
